I had trouble like you installing torque rod bushings on a semi once. The second one I did I used an old backhoe bushing to fit over the rubber as I pressed it into the arm. This kept the rubber from bulging and allowing the bushing to continue in without harm. Just found a you tube video on this same concept. Look at about minute 7.
