Start with if the 3pt goes up and down. That will tell you a lot about the hyd system. Brakes wear and fill the hyd system with brass looking material. If let go to long the brake material is gone and it's metal on metal contaminating the system. The 3pt valve is likely to stick if this happens and won't function. There is a strainer on bottom of trans that if cleaned regularly then the tractor fairs pretty well in life. The 354 is a good engine yes it most likely has a head gasket issue. No big deal to put one in. Probably the best Massey tractor built for the era. They're good tractors when maintained like any machine. If it's that rough like any machine be prepared. When you go to start it should be quiet for a second or so after it starts then you'll hear the hyd charge pump kick in and then the radial pump in front of the engine. If the pto is slowly spinning with it shut off it's normal the pto brake is nothing to brag about and never seem to work. There's a lever above the rear axle to engage/disengage the pto system mechanically. Shift the multipower and hit the brakes it shouldn't slip. It's a good one speed power shift that gives little trouble but the tractor will free wheel down a hill without the multipower in high. It's not a big deal once you've been in one for 40 years lol.
