175 of what size and weight bales?

Yes many variables but we need to plan for the worst. Nothing wrong with having some hay left over when the cows start grazing.

Another question is storage - will these bales be in a shed or outdoors uncovered? If the OP is planning on feeding for 7 months he is pretty far north. In drier areas there is a lot less loss in outside storage then there is in typically wetter areas. etc.

The 2.5% dry matter method above and thinking of hay by weight rather than by number of bales usually avoids unpleasant surprises in the spring as calving time approaches.

5X6 1300# to 1500# bales.

Everyone thinks there bales weigh 1500. Bales can vary so much across the field. I bet more weigh closer to 1350 than 1500.

In your calculations in your response post above you figured dry matter needs of the cow. Need to adjust up on your hay count because the hay would be carrying a little moisture. Also they would shrink a little from the time they are baled until fed.

Hay requirements go up as the temp goes down. Also with a wet hair coat, Heavy pregnancy or Nursing calf.

Your calculations would be minimum. My 175 count builds in a good cushion of average mixed grass hay. So my rough math wouldn't be far off from your pencil math.
