Subject: RE: Broken off plunger in iowa hydrant

I have had the same thing happen. I was about to give up and get the backhoe but finally got it. I did what was suggested and welded a hard lag bolt to the rod and after quite a few tries it bit and i was able to pull it out. I left the water on and put a cap on the pipe while i fixed the rod and plunger. Mine had rusted the rod off where it threaded to the brass rubber stopper. I had a new stopper from a kit and repaired the plunger rod with a bolt welded to it after i cut the head off the bolt and cut the rod back past the rusty area. It wasnt too bad of a repair and was less of a mess than digging it up.
