Try chucking some kind of inch-diameter-or-larger spindle in a drill, turn a sanding belt inside-out, and loop the sanding belt between the drill spindle and the axle spindle. It 'should' give a more controlled experience than just zapping it with a angle grinder. I've never tried this myself though; just theorizing a bit.
