North central TX | Oilfield pipe and suckered rod can become magnetized underground. Is one or the other nearly impossible to hold an arc on? If so it's magnetic.
Drilling and "plug" welding will help if it's not mag. Most definitely need to crank up the power. They are slightly dissimilar metals and more importantly, vastly different thickness. Need to get it hot to penetrate both.
If you have magnetic stuff you can sometimes heat the areas you need to weld with a torch and get them to work. But man it's a PITA.
