North Central Alabama | I have a very heavy 20' dual tandem gooseneck dump trailer. I use it with my both my JD 6420 or CIH MX120. I use the tractor hydraulics to raise and lower. I have been using the hay spear behind the 6420 in first picture. It will not tilt up enough to be level due to the location on the top and bottom pin location.
I am going to weld a 2 5/16" ball on top of the new (Countyline) spear i bought at TSC. I have a few 2 5/16" balls already. Do i just cut the shank off of one of them and weld it to the top of the hay spear? Or do i need one that would be made of different metal to penetrate the weld better? Best i can tell the plate i am gonna weld ball on is either 3/16 or 1/4" thick. Do i need to beef that plate up any? What would be the weak point that you would worry about on this 6420 or MX120 tractor and hay spear? Would you worry about the tractor 3 point hitch more than the hay spear carrying all that weight?
