Subject: How much hay does a pregnant beef cow eat?

CNY
I’m a dairy guy, forgive my ignorance. We have developed a decent market for 15-20 freezer steers to people a year for a good price. We buy 400lb Holstein Angus cross calves from a nearby dairy and feed them out. Rotational grazing in the summer, baleage in the winter. Feed them ground ear corn all year. Have old dairy facilities, bedded pack barn & large concrete barnyard. The price of the calves keeps going up. I never wanted cows because I wanted to be able to get out of it quick if something changed, but I guess cows go on the trailer as easy as anything else.

Toying with the idea of having 10-15 cows and calving them out and raising our own calves. I usually figure on being able to graze from the middle of April until the end of September every year. Planting some covers for grazing might be able to add up to 60 days a year but our falls are quite variable, usually wet. So trying to figure out how much more hay/baleage I would need for the winter. Dry matter lbs. We would calve in late winter/early spring. What do you guys figure on? I know there’s vet cost, death loss, opportunity cost, interest, etc etc. I have hay I sell standing so just trying to see how much more of that I would need to put up vs selling. Thanks
