Southwest Illinois | Depth, speed and soil conditions all matter. I am in SW IL. In the day we pulled a 30' Sunflower behind a Versatile 875, then we went to a 40' Tigermate and a Versatile 946. Today we pull a newer CaseIH 255 with either a 470 or 580 Quad. To pull it close to 10 mph you need the 580. The 470 will handle it up to about 8 or a tad faster. Once you hit 7.5 mph the HP requirement really seems to go up dramatically. 10hp/foot will get you by in a lot of situations, but if you want to run 8 plus you need more like 12 to 15/foot. We did pull our 40' 255 once with a 350 Steiger and it worked OK but mostly 6mph and it was a load. Personally, I would rather pull something narrower at 8 to 10mph than something wider at 6mph. They work much better with speed. If I had a 400 Steiger I would be looking at something in the 30 foot range. Also consider resale as 50' and above cultivators generally take a beating on price compared to stuff in the 30 to 40' range. Also your finishing attachment will matter as well, especially if you get something to tow behind it. | |
