I would make the bottom of the openings 22-24 inches tall unless just feeding smaller cattle and the top about 4 1/2 feet tall minimum, dad's cousin down in Iowa used to do just that and fed round bales in it, when he cleaned barn every day he pushed the bale in a bit further with the tractor.
Anyone familiar with a fence line bale feeder?
