On a 4020, you could jack the axle up high enough to get a 4x4 under the tire, then add a fulcrum close to the tire and step on the end to lift the tire up and let it back down, with a little experience you can guesstimate the play close enough for a 4020. Bigger ones are much more precise and heavy, I believe any play is bad on those.
