Subject: RE: Recommend a new chain saw

Mid-Michigan
You don't say what you cut. Brush? A few cords of fireplace wood. Would help to make some recommendations. Anyway, I have a few saws I like. Bar far, the best saw I have ever owned is a jonsered 2171. It has hp, light and most importantly, fast (chainspeed). However, after Husqvarna bought them out (or merged), Husqvarna made the jonsered line, the junk line. My 2171 is still the saw ill grab first. I own jonsered, Husqvarna and stihl. I like all of them. Beware that huskie and stihl both make some junk. The so called homeowners saws. There is a tremendous difference in the quality of different models of saws. If you want a good saw, you are going to pay for it. My 2 big saws are Husqvarna 395xp and stihl 500I. Each one of these saws are big and are only used when I have to. The 500I is much newer, lighter and has fuel injection (no choking, starts like a dream). These saws probably don't see 5 gal of fuel a year. But, when you need them, you need them. Each will be $1300+. Getting a midsized professional saw is going to run you $800 -$1000. Just do your homework. Run from homeowner, farmer, occasional user stuff. Find the balance between chains peed, horsepower and weight. Unless you log, stay away from big bars. They just cause problems. For me, a 20 inch bar is perfect and is what I use 80% of the time. You can't go wrong with stihl or Husqvarna unless you buy some of their junk. If you buy junk, you get junk.
