Subject: RE: Wood Planer brands and models

Franklinton, LA
During the past 20 years I have owned Delta, Ridgid and DeWalt bench top planers. The Delta was adequate for a small hobby shop. I kept the Ridgid a few days and returned it to Home Depot for a full refund. For over 15 years I have really enjoyed using my 13" DeWalt #735 bench top planer. I also liked the 15" Grizzly 3 HP planer I had from 2007 - 2013. It was very easy to sell the Grizzly for a good price after I completed some big projects.

EBay offers DeWalt and 3 or 4 brands of planer knives for a good price. My experience has been that the slightly more expensive DeWalt knives from Lowe's, Home Depot and Amazon last a lot longer.

This year I have made over 130 cutting boards to sell at the Mandeville Trailhead Market in Mandeville, LA. I plane the rough beech, cherry, hickory, maple, oak or walnut lumber and rip the boards for pieces to glue together. After the glue dries, I run the cutting boards through the 13" DeWalt #735 planer. I start with a 1/16" cut and then a 1/32" cut. I set the planer on low speed and take a 1/64" cut for the final pass.

I avoid problems with the planer cutting too deep on the ends by using 1 or 2 pieces that extend 3" past the adjacent pieces.
