So far, I agree with most of the posters. The DeWalt #735 is a very good 13" wide bench top planer. It will take a 1/16" cut in most hardwoods up to about 8" wide. DeWalt very strongly discourages the use of a spiral cutter head on this planer. They claim it takes too much starting torque due to the weight and the bearings cannot handle the extra weight. Also, you must take the planer apart to install a $400.00 attachment on a $600.00 planer. If you get the DeWalt #735 planer, you need to spend another $50.00 for the infeed and outfeed table attachment. You also need to keep this attachment properly adjusted.

I think you will need to plane a lot of lumber to justify the cost of a spiral cutter head.

Grizzly and others make very good 15" and wider planers with 3 - 5 HP, 240 volt-motors. These planers will cost well over $1.000.00 but they are a lot more productive than the bench top planers. The #735 DeWalt will leave the lumber a lot smoother than the 15" and larger planers.
