Subject: RE: Wood Planer brands and models

NW Iowa
A year ago I bought the largest table top model Grizzly sold at the time. The cutter drum is spiral and it feeds in like a dream. There is no special trick to start feeding the board in, it just takes the board in nice and flat and feeds it through. It is not a big powerful model like the big horse floor models, it likes a shallow cut like 1/32" to 1/16". It will plane 12" wide oak or ash at 1/8" but it is working the motor almost too hard. Another nice thing about the spiral cutter is it is not as noisy, it makes a singing type sound and it does not make cutting waves in the board like a straight blade planer. I am not especially promoting Grizzly, there are other good brands out there too but I have the feeling I will have this Grizzly till the end of my life. Another nice thing about this spiral cutter is it has small separate blades so if I do run a nail through it, heaven forbid, I will only need to replace a couple blades. At least that is what i think will happen.
