How far are you realistically going to run it? put in a couple/three used truck batteries and keep it on a charger all the time, that's what I'd do anyway.
If you're going gas, how fast do you want? I'd probably end up with a hydrostat off a lawn mower, maybe a gear trans also for wider range.
