Seen videos of people climbing and always wondered how that safety rope got up there in the first place?
There are various types of climbing. Only Free Climbing is done without any form of “protection.” Free Climbers are generally crazy and a very small minority of climbers. They get a lot of publicity for good reason; they’re proud of posting themselves in terrifying situations.
Sport climbing used pre-installed anchors on defined climbing routes. Traditional climbing uses removable anchors like cams and rock nuts. Both of these have the lead climber hauling the rope. Top Roping has a rope hung from an anchor at the summit of the route and is generally what you see in gyms today.
There are variations in terminology and acceptable practice. Then the various forms ice climbing, rappelling, Big Wall stuff, etc.
As far as safety, being on a roof or grain bin ladder without a harness is a whole lot more dangerous than being clipped into a well protected climbing route.
