My daughter and husband climb the tallest steepest most challenging they can find. This was last week in Yosemite. My SIL was on a roof here helping with a repair, a year or so ago,"this is way less safe than climbing walls" he said. They are very calculating on safety systems,,the rope is there only for when they make a mistake,,,which you "never do" .The thrill of the risk I believe is why they enjoy the sport.
Good for them. Personally, I try to avoid activities that one mistake results in certain death.
Do you drive a car?
Climbing is a lot of fun. You’re an experienced outdoorsman, I bet you’d enjoy it more than you think. Find a gym in your nearest city and take an introductory Top Roping Belay class. Should only take 1-2 hours and they’ll provide everything you need to try it out. Age and physical ability really don’t matter, it’s a thinking sport way more than a muscle sport; Route Reading, Spotting, Footing are the factors that really matter.
Yup. Every day. Have had several accidents through the years. Hardly a scratch. I said good for them, happy they enjoy it. Not for me.
