Reason a 7018 rod is hard to start is that the core burns up inside the Flux. I don't weld anymore, poor eyesight & shake hand, but when I did using a 7018 rod I kept a large hammer laying on a piece of wood close by. Before a new strike I would reach over & tap the end of the rod on the hammer breaking off that excess Flux. Rod was easy to start then. Did this with both AC & DC
