Different welders make a difference as well. We have a Miller thunderbolt that is very hard to strike, and the welding arc is unstable. Only use when I have to. Also have an old Lincoln tombstone, which is totally different. Much easier to strike, and a smoother arc. I’ve found that the Lincoln brand 7018AC strike pretty good. Much better than Excalibur. I often use 3/32 at 90A for general work up to 1/4”. Heavier stuff use 1/8 at 120-135A. Heavy work 5/32 at 150-180A.
