Find a Lowe’s and get a box of the Lincoln brand E7018AC. A much better welding rod than a standard 7018, especially for an AC welder. Best rods I’ve found.

I'll give it a try. The old 7018 I used to use was very hard to start an arc. This Lagrange stuff weld like a 6013 but is supposed to have more strength, more like the 70xx"s.

Is Farmer's Choice still in business in Omaha?

I have a Marquette ac welder that I use for heavier stuff. Normally I use 1/8" 6011 and 6013 rods. I tried 1/8" 7018AC rods and had a problem striking and holding an arc (yes, I cleaned the flux off the end of the rods I had welded with, to expose the rod before striking). Tried higher amperage, but that wasn't the cure. I talked to a "professional welder" and he suggested going with a 3/32" rod instead. Made a huge difference in striking and holding an arc with 7018AC's, for me anyway.
Just food for thought.
