I know it is a work of fiction, but there is an interesting incident written by Louis L'Amour in his book, "Jubal Sackett" concerning an animal thought to be extinct. The tale is set in an area of what is now Colorado some miles southwest of where Denver is now located in the years prior to the Revolutionary War when Spain still claimed that area. Whether you believe such is possible or not it's still a pretty good book.
