Beware a garment/suit bag counts as a carry-on, NOT a personal item. This catches people sometimes when traveling for weddings.
I personally fly Alaska out of CVG or IND a lot, they’re my favorite airline. Not sure if they serve Kansas City. Southwest is also good. The ultra-low-cost carriers leave a lot to be desired, be aware of flight cancelation statistics.
