I am +2 generations back. Your soils, yields, crop residue, fall, spring initial tillage. Are things I think would help. I have an old JD 1010. I got it dirt cheap. Missing a few shanks. I relocated some known plug areas so instead of 6” spacing a few are almost 8”. It made a world of difference in plugging on corn stalks disc/chiseled in fall. Spring disc/chisel it still plugged unless very dry. Some land erodible so doing spring tillage of 10a preferable.
Iirc the 960jd was a big improvement. 6” but over 4 ranks. So instead of 18” between shanks same tube it’s 2 feet. *in most cases tires, frame might change that* iirc they have a 5th rank by tires.
I have planned relocating every shank on mine for 7”. But few issues it does not go. Honestly I can’t tell difference 6” or 7”. My plan would require 8” in a few spots. I should do it. It gets complicated. Goal is at least 20” between each bar. Nothing more them 7.5” between bars.
Many newer have even more trash clearance. Shovels matter. As mine wear even spring first tillage passes. If I disc first (or after D/C) it works better.
If verticle tillage machines were not as expensive as a decent tractor. I would like to try one.

We are aol green around here except for a red TM200 with a rolling basket. Even my brother that wears green underwear has never had a bad thing to say about it.

Had a 980 Deere with 4” danish shovels on S tines. Very nice machine. Traded for a well used 60ft wilrich quad x2. 2011 machine. Well worn but does a very nice job

Will definitely confirm that the 960 is a HUGE improvement over the 1010.
We had a 1010 for half a season and quickly tired of it plugging (also seems to be underbuilt, but didn't have any issues while we had it).
Have ran a 45 foot 960 for 7 years now; the best flowing FC we've had (right up there with the old high clearance Kewanees that you can no longer get parts for).. 1 disk pass, and then it'll handle 250bu corn stalks, which is a hard thing to find

I think it really matters what you want to spend. New ones are fantastic, but serious money. Another issue on old big field cultivators is fact a lot of frames are just wore out as are shanks. Something decent will be 25000-125000.

Have put many acres on a 44’ John Deere 2210 floating hitch with 4 bar harrow. It is setup on 6” spacing and does an awesome job of smoothing and leveling. However, we work most of our ground in the fall and if it doesn’t get worked in the fall, we no till. 2210 does not like a bunch of corn stalk residue, but if you work it in the fall it’ll do a nice job

I was looking over a consignment auction older tillage. Much has significant side to side play. The cost for new bolts, bushings. Are not cheap. Odds are 40% bolts will break taking apart. *unless you use heat*. Yep I have bought a few sub grand tillage pieces.

Are you still looking ? I have a machine worth looking at. 2013 Kuhn Krause 5635 50’ we bought new. I can honestly tell you it has been over less than 9,000 acres. Always shedded when not in use. Excellent shape. 7” sweeps new in ‘21 3 bar harrow with round bar rolling basket standard hitch we are mostly no till pulled by a NH T 9040
