I am +2 generations back. Your soils, yields, crop residue, fall, spring initial tillage. Are things I think would help. I have an old JD 1010. I got it dirt cheap. Missing a few shanks. I relocated some known plug areas so instead of 6” spacing a few are almost 8”. It made a world of difference in plugging on corn stalks disc/chiseled in fall. Spring disc/chisel it still plugged unless very dry. Some land erodible so doing spring tillage of 10a preferable.
Iirc the 960jd was a big improvement. 6” but over 4 ranks. So instead of 18” between shanks same tube it’s 2 feet. *in most cases tires, frame might change that* iirc they have a 5th rank by tires.
I have planned relocating every shank on mine for 7”. But few issues it does not go. Honestly I can’t tell difference 6” or 7”. My plan would require 8” in a few spots. I should do it. It gets complicated. Goal is at least 20” between each bar. Nothing more them 7.5” between bars.
Many newer have even more trash clearance. Shovels matter. As mine wear even spring first tillage passes. If I disc first (or after D/C) it works better.
If verticle tillage machines were not as expensive as a decent tractor. I would like to try one.
