NW Ohio, near Findlay | Those wagon running gears were around, mostly just on the rear, not sure it they were walking beams or not. I think they just added another set of axles, was easy, just longer center connector steel tube. Also, big tires as we know today, just didn't exist, just add more tires.
I helped our neighbor unload silage wagons into a blower with some sort of drag on front of wagon to take silage to blower, think discharged silage to one side only. If wagon was low, you could have higher sides for more volume of silage. Back then, many of the barns were not designed for tall machinery, most were only for cattle with hay mow above, and later converted to machinery storage. Now we have tall pole barns, all old barns are mostly gone.
