bshannon - 12/8/2023 09:02 The old cheese plants date back to the days of horse and buggy, cheese factories had to be close enough for the farmers to haul to. I can think of 4 or 5 within 15 miles of me that were running up until the 1980's. One left operating in the county today. We took a trip to Wisconsin back 30 years ago just to see cheese being made. But the factories we saw and stopped at were closed and we were told it was the EPA that killed them. They weren't allowed to dump the water into the sewers and they couldn't find an economical way to deal with the water. I remember on town where the factory had a giant mouse statute. I think somewhere over in the east part of the state we found a factory that made most of the cheese for the whole US they said. They were done for the day so we didn't get to see the process. I recall they also had a store next to the factory. |
