Subject: Grain Drill: JD 1590 vs 1990CCS or N530C

Holly Hill, SC
I currently have a JD 1560 (15') and 1590 (15') no till grain drill attached to a Houck Hitch. 15' road width and 30' planting width. This has been a great set up for us for 20 plus years and multiple rebuilds and patch ups. I am looking at either buying 2 NEW 1590 drills and reuse my Houck Hitch (probably $150 to $160k). -or- do I by a USED JD 1990 CCS ($90 to $140K) or JD N530C (newest version) ($140k to $190K). These newer drills are air drills with a center fill hopper.
Thoughts on the air seeded vs box drill? This will be primarily used to plant winter wheat (800 to 1000 acres) in a no till environment. Field range in size from 2 to 140 acres. Quick fold and move to the next field would be a bonus. Currently have to get in and out a few times and open/close manual valves, hook cable, engage drive etc. (5 to 10 minutes)
1. Seed tubes stop up and ease of cleaning out?
2. Monitor for seed blockage? Can a JD 2600 work? With activation? Do I need to make sure a "black box" comes with the drill?
3. My Unverferth 3750 seed tender should be fine loading the center fill?
4. Is there enough weight to hold the wings down? Assume the cylinders will hold it down and transfer weight from the center.
5. Center fill hopper is not water tight??? Needs caulk and maybe a tarp???
6. Hard to work on the row units below the hopper?
7. Will it work in a light rain? Easy to clean out flutes if rain coming?
Thanks
