I agree, they do work. Just how soft the ground will be afterward depends, I think, on soil types in your area.
We find it helps quite a bit with compaction, but it does not leave the ground nearly as loose and soft as a full-blown chisel/tillage does, at least here.
For us, it seems to leave a some structure in the soil profile, instead of destroying all of it and leaving it mushy when wet.
