Wisconsin | The difference is the difference between a farmer and an engineer. The wood works best in compression, and the wire works in tension, look at a corner post brace. A turnbuckle or twisted wire will take up the slack in the connections and adjust to square. The wood brace will get a little wear in the nails or screws and sag and have no way to adjust if it's in tension. In compression it will be solid. The difference is the connections, as that university bridge in Florida should have paid a little better attention to.
Or am I misunderstanding the question? I assume you mean a 2x6 piece of lumber by "2x", did you mean something else by "2x"?
