Yes, that would be a tensile brace, like a wire or cable pulling it square. If you use wood, you want it as a compression brace, you see that pic the X, the one that counts is in compression, the tension side of the X is useless with the cut in the middle.

edit: The solid part of the x is in compression. The half of the x in tension is cut in the middle for four connection points, so useless as a structural tension element.
