CR's you either run round bar for corn and soybeans or small grains concaves. I do install custom made cover plates on my round bar in barley so I didn't have to buy and swap out and I run them in soybeans too. Was a recommendation from Marion Calmer. Helps in tough beans and probably unnecessary in dry beans but it only takes about 10 mins to install or remove so I run them always.
Think you are cutting some corners/over simplifying with that statement. New Holland offers small grain, universal, and roundbar concaves. The small grain and universal concaves can be tweaked by pulling wires to allow more space for threshed material to fall through. Or you can add cover plates to increase the threshing.
In addition the aftermarket companies offers concaves with various inserts to adjust threshing/separating capability. Some of these allow for easier threshing changes as you do not need to change the frame, just the modules you want to change. A lot lighter to change a module than the entire concave.
Whether one needs to have more than the round bar and small grains concaves depends on crops harvested and how good a job you want to do. Just like changing sieves. Some people always run the same set and some change for the crop as they want to do the best job possible.
