There is a recent podcast about it on I think of all things ‘Planet Money’.

I think the summary was it saves hardly any school district dollars, it results in few if any student gains, it doesn’t really lead to long term staff retention, and parents have to come up with childcare one day a week which for some households is problematic and expensive.  But that is the bird’s eye view for some research type person.
