Subject: RE: 2730 chisel breaking shanks

Tuscola, IL
Not sure how many acres. I’d say probably in excess of 8-10,000. Broke one shank last year and that was the first and last until this year.

We have one that’s due to have the disk gang shaft replaced. Been babying it along this year with blades getting loose. The threads on the end of the shaft are shot. I ended up getting a second nut and running it on where the threads were still good and that has gotten us through the last week or so. Didn’t have any issue getting the nut. In fact, I just got a second one because I assume the threads on the one I used to double nut are probably shot now.

Does yours have the compression plate on the outside of the disk gang? We changed some bearings after last fall on the disk gang and, once I figured out how that whole setup works and how the release tool works, it went pretty smooth. Getting the gang unbolted from the hangers was definitely the worst part of the job.

They definitely do a great job and have been very reliable until this shank issue. Going to read through the book again tomorrow and see if there is something I’ve been missing. Went to get a spare shank the other day and were told Deere expects to have them back in stock on December 3rd. Luckily it looks like we’re going to get a decent rain tonight/tomorrow.
