After all expenses paid, $100k sounds like gravy.

Now let’s paint a picture. For a guy to run 500 head, you’re at minimum of a couple thousand acres on up to 5000+ acres depending on the part of the country your in. Property tax and land maintenance isn’t free. Think of your average crop farmer that runs a couple thousand acres??? Bet they pull in a lot more then $100k before the government subsidies.

Depending on the part of the country you’re talking open grazing or facilities to calve in. You have your feed bill for the winter. Are you selling off the cow or back grounding?

Loader tractor is gonna cost you $200k nowadays. Mower rake and baler can push $150k. What if your someone who plants forages and runs a chopper??? Have you priced a tmr mixer lately??

Now plan a wife and kids and living expenses??

Yes all of the numbers I listed should coming out of the before $100k net profit, but let’s be honest… how many operations are truly able to do that without a wife who works in town or cash crop’s subsidized by government???

We don’t run 500 mama cows but I still have to have a off the farm job to make it work and I’m a single fella…

I should add… now pay the tax on that and compete with the cash crop guys to buy land when every run up in corn price there’s ground that should stay in sod getting turned over
