Ludington/Manistee MI area

banders - 11/29/2023 09:37 I have asked farmers why we are having a record crop. All so far have given the standard answer " Better Genetics". But then I say that the farmers are also doing a better job of corn production management. Higher fertility , making better soils, better use of water by tiling and residue management, etc. Some agree with me, some not much..

Most of what saved us is genetics.  Yes farmers do a better job but we also face challenges we haven’t fought before.  20 years ago we didn’t have tar spot and NCLB.  All in all I’m guessing I’ll end up near APH but have had a few fields with fantastic yields despite being drought stressed.  I will have fields with yields i couldn’t imagine 20-25 years ago let alone in a drought year.   Later in the thread you ask if the Canadian smoke hurt us.   If you have 30% plus moisture corn in November yes you are losing test weight and kernel size.
