| I have asked farmers why we are having a record crop. All so far have given the standard answer " Better Genetics".
But then I say that the farmers are also doing a better job of corn production management. Higher fertility , making better soils, better use of water by tiling and residue management, etc. Some agree with me, some not much.
So where are we on climate change if our yields are increasing. One point is we continue to breed corn for climate/climate change? Corn originally came from Mexico or warmer climates. It had to be adapted to move as north as it is being gown now. One example is that corn in the southern states also continues to increase in yields, if heat is going to be a big problem will not the Southern states yields drop first? Also the rising CO2 does not seem to be any issue and may help crop production because the more Co2 is still being added to green houses to increase production. Also as the climate warms up more crop ground becomes available in Canada nd Russia, etc.
So far after a century or more of climate change in the US crop yields continue to increase. Only trend line so far that as the climate changes the crop yield trend continues upward, so when will this stop?
If crop yields do start to trend down at least we have AI/Robotic cricket farms to feed us?
So will next year be our third of drought or will we get a good year and corn will be below $4.00? Good luck on forecasting what you need to be doing. | |
