The next “innovation” will be diesel/electric with a generator powering electric motors. Basically a locomotive. I think you’ll see them in combines first. Electric motors would be an easy replacement for CVT drives and hydros. Not sure what the reason is that this hasn’t already been implemented. Maybe cost is the biggest factor but the tech already exists so price shouldn’t be astronomical over hydraulic components.

But diesel will be around for a long time. I could see hydrogen eventually replacing it but that would be a long way off. Outside of that I don’t know of a suitable replacement that exists right now.
