Subject: RE: Yanmar engine no start —need some help

Faunsdale, AL
Many Yanmar diesels have the glow plugs on a separate ignition switch position so you can crank it without them. Some had a Therm-o-start device in the intake instead of glow plugs.

I expect the one pump plunger is stuck. The rack may be stuck as well. Unless it’s in a heated building, I think I would try pulling it to spare the starter and hope to get enough heat into it that it might help unstick the pump plungers etc. Maybe even warm the sticking one gently with a torch. A dose of injector cleaner/magic fluid run through it probably would be a good idea.

Cranking it in a high gear with clutch depressed may be a good idea since if the rack is stuck, it could overspeed. Sounds like it’s not delivering enough fuel to go full bore but it’s nice to have a way to slow one down. Or take loose intake piping etc so you can smother it with a book or board over the intake and shut off the air.

I have had some luck putting a gasoline soaked rag in the air filter instead of starting fluid. Or small amounts of starting fluid. WD-40 sprayed into intake works well if you can find a can with the old style paint spray type nozzle on it. Have to take out air filters/bypass them ………somehow got it to work………yeah that was on an old IDI 7.3 Navistar in a Ford. I think I tried about everything on that old pig after it started running out of fuel at 1/4 tank on gauge etc. Pulling it worked best!

Note….WD40 has to be fogged into the intake while cranking. You’re just supplementing any small amount of fuel that’s being injected or supplying some if there’s none. It works better than propane which works if you have any fuel being injected to light it off or can mix it with some ether already in the air filter…….that trick was from a JD 2440 with a reverser. Couldn’t be pulled and was an absolute pig to get primed up if it ever ran out of fuel.
