Wisconsin | I've had the opposite experience. I had all Dewalt 18v and bought too many replacement batteries with poor results, first thinking the mexico batteries weren't as good as the ones that came with tools that come from Japan, then found Japan replacements and they weren't any better. I've had decent luck with the originals that come with tools, but replacements are not as good.
20V have been great so far, but I'm LATE in switching. The adapters aren't great, but the best you're going to do with old 18v dewalts in my opinion. Don't leave the battery in the adapter for storage, is the only thing I've heard and experienced.
Beware of different grades of batteries, 18v XRP are the only ones worth buying, were $100 for a two pack on sale when I last bought them years ago. Don't mess with the black compact batteries. Likewise, there are different grades of li ion, can't explain those, but don't get less than the best. Cheap batteries are not cheap.
