Anytime anything gets built in a "basement" there is never enough room to work on things that go bad. At work we have a leg in a 12'x12' hole. I wish it was 14' or 16' wide, especially trying to tie unloads in since the leg footprint is rectangular. If you put stuff underground, double the space you think you need. 2 or 3 feet around a bearing isn't a lot of room to work on it. 4 or 6 is much nicer. Leave enough room to get a big pry bar or a bearing puller and impact on the ends of any shaft.
