| I worked in an old time hardware store earlier in life. The owner often told stories about selling people a cook stove, refrigerator, and washer before the house was hooked to the grid. Sometimes a few years before but the people wanted to be ready when electricity was hooked up. He also told lots of stories about how after WW2 the farmers out West were going from 2 row to 4 row equipment. The people here were going from horses or 1 row to 2 row. They would send buyers out there to buy up all the unwanted 2 row and have trucks pick up and bring back to Tennessee. He said they never unloaded anything at the store. Farmers would be waiting on the trucks as fast as they could roll in. They would lay hands on the pieces they wanted and the truck would go to the farms to unload. He said the only thing limiting how much you could sell was how much merchandise you could get. They had the Ford car dealership, International tractor dealership, hardware store, appliance store, and furniture store. Sold everything but groceries and clothes. | |
