North of London
An aunt and uncle farmed without hydro until mid 50ies.
Their buildings were a long way from road which I expect was one reason hydro was too expensive to put in with several poles required to get to the buildings.

So they had a water pump powered with a gas engine in the barn to pump water for the livestock.
They also milked more cows than many at that time, I believe 20 or more cows milking and they did it by hand

Milk cans were placed in a water tank with fresh water pumped into it with the gas powered pump to cool the milk.

And the house had a hand pump on a well near the front door for water in the house carried in in buckets as needed.

We lived in luxury compared to my cousins with running water even in the upstairs washroom and hot water too when wood stove was on for us but tank in attic provided water that was not very cold in the summer.
