East Central Ia | We are going to invest in a dump pit and eliminate a truck at harvest. With the cost of trucks, trailers, and finding drivers we feel this is our best long term option.
We will probably replace our existing receiving leg as the boot and head need work and we would like a taller discharge height for future expansion. Our current receiving leg is around 4,500 bph and fed by a drive over u-trough.
We have room to remove our current u-trough concrete area and add a single hopper pit without touching our scale I believe. We would be in fairly tight quarters and the ground starts to fall off fairly quickly so we would need to build that up to make a smoother transition to drive off. However we would really like a double dump pit and not need to move the truck and utilize the large flat area where our scale sits.
We have plenty of fall in three directions to get drainage from any type of pit.
Our scale is 60’ x 12’ and sits on a concrete basement that is 5’ deep.
I am wondering if we can remove the deck on the scale and cut a section out or remove the entire floor of the existing basement and lower it. It probably wouldn’t need to be lowered the entire 12’ width as most dumps I am seeing are 10’ wide and would also slope towards the center for grain flow making the width get narrower as it got lower. It would just need to be wide enough to be able to get to a conveyor or u-trough for service or repairs.
The end of the scale is about 6-8’ from the center of the leg so we would have to convey the grain inline with the truck, and dump into another conveyor to take it up to our leg.
Something like this would be ideal but dump out the end, not in the middle.
