Subject: First electric equipment

North of London
I expect it will be different for different people and circumstances

My parents were married in 1941.
They moved into the farm my grandparents had run since early 1900's
Hydro was installed in early 30ies or late 20ies when it was available.
Some places chose not to connect but I understood from my father than many hooked up as soon as they could install wiring in buildings.

After lights I think the next thing was an electric motor on whatever machine/job they considered was important.

In our case we had running water since it was set up for the windmill to pump water into a tank in the attic to supply the house and of course a tank in yard raised to supply the barn and i do remember when we got a 'pressure system' installed and the water tank was pulled down, probably in 48 or 49

I could see a water pump being a priority for some but we always had a milking machine, cream separator and electric grinder to grind grain for the livestock before the water was electrified.

In the house?? there was a hot water tank heated by woodstove for quite a while and it was probably replaced by electric water heater about the same time a new furnace that still burned coal was installed with a fan to circulate the air. Also at that time a 'new to us' electric stove for the kitchen. this would be around 1950 and a refrigerator came along soon after that and a couple years later a freezer

Oh yes there was a big old radio that worked with hydro before many other things in the house.
Have memories of radios run off battery and having to put a new battery in it to get it running again but we had one on electricity before many of the other things I just listed. I think it was a Canadian program that was called The Happy Gang that we listened to regularly.

And then there were a number of other programs that I forget the names of but of course from that time period people would remember Fibber McGee's closet and I remember waiting for the inevitable every show.
