Panels continue freefalling in price and increasing in efficiency. CU prices are also getting cheaper, as are the prices for storage and other components. Minus subsidies and considering electricity to stay the same, even the most pessimistic estimates will make a solar array pay in about 12 years. 
The difficulty that I have in assigning a payback is; I'm old. Very remote chances of me outliving the panels or payback period.
