NE ND | On the yard I grew up on we had a sentimental moment today. If you look at the photos below you'll see a young guy, about 13 years old, sitting on a brand new JD 620 tractor with the A on the dealer trailer headed back to town. The same guy, my father, who is now 79 is sitting on the same tractor for the last time. He figures he's sitting in about the same spot in the yard in both photos.
On the farm I grew up this was our only loader tractor for pretty much my entire time. I've made a pile of miles on that ole girl myself. My brother and I both made hay in high school for money and loaded all the trucks with this 620. For a brief period I had a 4230 there with a 640 loader when I farmed off that yard. As my father said in its early life it had a sweep rake on the front building haystacks all summer, constantly shifting. It pulled four bottoms in the fall and a combine in harvest. It has had lots of work over the years of course. This summer some of the hi/lo components in the transmission gave out. After adding up parts costs and it's age my father decided to let her go. He had a good friend with a 630 gas with low use he bought. We moved the wide front from the 620 to the 630 and off to the salvage yard it went.
He probably wouldn't want to admit it but he's got a couple of gears which aren't as smooth and fresh as they used to be either just like the 620 but he's still farming lol.
Long story short, if you take good care of something, don't abuse it, both man and machine will go a long time! 66 years is a great run for a tractor on the same farm!
