| We have had a dry year here in SE SD, but we had some timely rains that allowed for an okay crop. We got a few inches of snow the end of October that melted and soaked in nice, so actually the top of the soil has more moisture than farther down. I have been tiling and excavating all fall and the first six inches to foot of soil has the most moisture and then it is hard bone dry down until about 4-5 feet deep when the soil finally softens up bit. Deep roots saved a lot of crop this year, but if it stays dry, the roots will have a challenge getting through that hard dry mass next year. | |
