Our milk hauler still has 3 trucks running can routes
Where ? I find it incredulous in this day and age that milk is still being transported in cans. Even more so, would be finding labor to man-handle the things.
In 1993 I traveled to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania ,the heart of Amish country. I stopped at an Amish dairy farm where there was a milk tanker truck in the yard loading milk. I asked an Amish woman in the yard if she minded if a North Carolina dairy farmer visited for a few minutes. She said sure, her husband in the barn would be happy to talk a few minutes. I spoke with the truck driver as he pumped milk. As there was no electricity at the farm ,the truck was equipped with a hydraulic motor driven milk pump powered by truck engine hydraulic pump. The farm bulk tank ( about 1000 gallons ) was cooled by diesel engine power unit, as was vacuum supplier for bucket type milking units. |
