New London, Wisconsin | I owned a crane business until retiring from it last year. The short answer is no. There are far too many risks to make this a worthwhile method.
It is possible, and legal to move a load over a live power line. But it needs to happen with a lot of additions safety measures in place. I only needed to do it once, and requested the local power company to assist which they happily did. All went well, and there was no other way possible to make this HVAC installation happen. Energized lines require a safe clearance from lines that you can visualize as a donut shape around the wire. That distance depends on the line voltage, but every crane has that chart right on the machine to explain that distance requirement. That number is not to be fudged. A load can pick up static charges from the line even with the proper clearance. Too close and you risk a sudden discharge into the person guiding it down. Or way too close you risk a power flash over or direct power line contact which can cause the voltage to follow the cable back to the crane and burn it to the ground in minutes. I would also be very reluctant to trust that any of the attaching points on the years old bins are structurally reliable enough to trust.
Have the power company de energize and drop the line. That's what house movers do. | |
